Arundo donax

Arundo donax, also known as Giant Reed, Carrizo, Spanish cane, wild cane, giant cane and arundo, is a tall perennial reed, growing in fresh and moderately saline waters.
Its native range may have extended from the Mediterranean region through the Middle East to India, but it is now widely planted and naturalised in the temperate and subtropical regions of both hemispheres. It forms dense stands on disturbed sites, sand dunes, in wetlands and riparian habitats.
It resembles bamboo in both its appearance and use. The canes contain silica, perhaps the reason for their durability, and have been used to make fishing rods, walking sticks, ski sticks, and also for corporal punishment, for example in school corporal punishment in Europe in the 19th and early 20th century, to cane a student's hands or buttocks.
Occasionally the term "Spanish cane" or its equivalents in other languages such as "Spanisches Rohr" and "Meerrohr" in German, were also (mistakenly) used for other types of cane such as rattan. But the two plants are very different, Arundo donax is very stiff, like bamboo, and rattan is very flexible.
