The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (usually shortened to the United Kingdom or the UK) is the nation containing England, Scotland, Wales, and the northern six counties of Ireland (Northern Ireland). It is a constitutional monarchy. Its population is about 60 million inhabitants. It has no official language, but the de facto official language is English.

Frequently, but incorrectly, people use "British", or even "English" as the adjective referring to anything from the UK.

[edit] Spanking in the UK

There is a long history of the use of spanking and other forms of corporal punishment in the various sections of the UK in domestic, school, judicial, and military contexts.

In addition, erotic spanking was stereotypically prevalent in England during the Victorian era, and remains so to this day.

Spanking implements that are, or were, popular in the UK include the birch, the cane, the tawse and the strap, among many others. The tawse was used for school corporal punishment in Scotland and parts of Northumberland in northern England.

In 1986, school spanking was made illegal in UK state schools. In 1998, this was extended to all UK schools.
