Caning is corporal punishment with a cane.

Caning was the preferred method of corporal punishment both for child disciplinary spanking and judicial corporal punishment in Europe, and particularly in England, from approximately the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. Canes were imported for this purpose from the British colonies.

The strokes of a caning were referred to as cuts. In school settings, they were typically given on the pupil's outstretched hand (hand caning) or on the seat of his trousers. Both boys and girls were subject to canings, but boys typically received the cane considerably more often and harder than girls. At home, canings either followed the same style as school cp, or sometimes they were also given on the child's bare bottom, which was a very severe punishment. Due to the severe pain caused by a cane cut, the number of cuts was typically low. The classic caning was "six of the best".

Adolescents and adults were subject to canings too, for example as a form of punishment in prisons. Today, disciplinary caning is most common in South and South-East Asia, in former British colonies such as India or Malaysia where rattan is grown commercially and canes are available for low cost.

[edit] Consensual caning

In consensual spanking, caning is harsh relative to a hand spanking or a strapping. Caning is not for the novice spankee/spanker. Caning on the bare buttocks leaves red stripes or weals. Even experienced spankees may need to be restrained. A caning is often given in a setting such as study or a dungeon.

In BDSM contexts, caning is particularly popular in the United Kingdom. Caning devotees practice caning, much like whipping, as an art form. A British spanking magazine was named after it: Kane. A caning may leave numerous welts.
