Caning is the technique of spanking with a cane.

Caning used to be the preferred method of corporal punishment both for child disciplinary spanking and judicial corporal punishment in Europe, and particularly in England, from approximately the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. Canes were imported for this purpose from the British colonies.

Today, disciplinary caning is most common in South and South-East Asia, in former British colonies such as India or Malaysia where rattan is grown commercially and canes are available for low cost.

[edit] Consensual caning

In consensual spanking, caning is harsh relative to a hand spanking or a strapping. Caning is not for the novice spankee/spanker. Caning on the bare buttocks leaves red stripes or weals. Even experienced spankees may need to be restrained. A caning is often given in a setting such as study or a dungeon.

In BDSM contexts, caning is particularly popular in the United Kingdom. Caning devotees practice caning, much like whipping, as an art form. A British spanking magazine was named after it: Kane. A caning may leave numerous welts.
