Contemporary spanking art differs in a few aspects from historic spanking art.

First, there are new media and art styles such as:

photography
motion picture (film)
comic and cartoon (and their Japanese equivalents, manga and anime)

Second, the computer era gave rise to further new developments such as rendered spanking art, computer graphics and digital image editors. The Internet allowed spanking art fans and artists globally to publish and share their works, knowledge and feedback, using e-mail, websites, web groups, web forums, mailing lists, spanking oekakis and blogs.

These technical advancements had a significant impact on the community: they made artistic expression and exchange much easier. An increasing number of contemporary spanking art is produced by hobby (fan) artists rather than professional artists.
