Hatching

Hatching (from French hachure) is an artistic technique to create tonal or shading effects by drawing (or painting or scribing) closely spaced parallel lines. A special case of hatching is cross-hatching, where lines are placed at an angle to one another so that they cross.
Hatching is mostly used when the artistic medium (e.g. ink drawing) either does not allow for greyshades, or greyshades are not possible in the employed printmaking technique (e.g. woodcut, engraving, etching). Skilled hatching can also convey the three-dimensional shape of a body or object.
Rendered computer-generated art can mimic hatching techniques in non-photorealistic rendering.
