PDF (or Portable Document Format) is a digital file format, capable of including both text and images. It is intended to provide a fixed page layout, serving as the digital equivalent of a printed page or set of printed pages. The person creating the file (often called the "designer" rather than the "author") specifies the layout in detail, and the form of the page presented is fixed, and is subject to little or no change by the viewer (except for scaling up or down).

Programs for viewing PDF files are widely and freely available on the World Wide Web. Programs for creating or editing PDF files are commercial products, with significant cost.
