A pirate is a robber at sea, or one who plunders the land from the sea, without having a commission from any sovereign nation. Piracy has existed for as long as people have used the oceans as trade routes, and exists to the present day.

Pirates, especially those of the 18th century, have entered popular culture in various ways and often in romanticized fiction. Interestingly, their criminal ruthless brutality is usually part of the romanticized image, and pirates are portrayed as heros and anti-heros alike. Stereotypical attributes of pirates in fiction include:

  • wild, uncivil appearance; ragged and unconventional clothing
  • all kinds of weapons
  • injuries from previous fights, such as lost eyes, hands, or legs, with artificial limbs
  • pirate ships (e.g. with ragged or black sails, and the Jolly Roger flag)
  • pirate slang, alcohol, and songs
  • speaking parrot or other exotic pet
  • sunken or buried treasure
  • curses and superstition
  • supernatural phenomena such as ghosts or monsters at sea

The Jolly Roger symbol also exists in many fonts, such as here:

Pirates are found in some spanking stories and in spanking art, e.g. the fan art drawings by Barbossasdaughter with characters from the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

An example of a spanking story with a pirate theme is The Cabin Boy by Lurking Dragon.

[edit] Other usage

In modern usage, the term "pirate" is also used for a person who plagiarizes another's words or ideas, or a person who copies copyrighted media (such as films, music or software) illegally without a license (copyright infringement).

A "pirate radio" station is one that makes illegal or unregulated radio transmissions.
