In the context of spanking, preparation refers to any activities that are in preparation for the spanking which is to follow.

In nonconsensual (disciplinary) spanking, the preparation for corporal punishment is usually much dreaded by the delinquent. In a way, it can be as bad or worse than the actual punishment because of the emotional suffering, especially if the preparation is long, ritualistic, includes extended waiting periods and/or humiliation.

In consensual spanking, especially erotic spanking, much pleasure can be taken from the anticipation that comes with a good preparation phase (for both partners). Taking one's time in this pre-spanking phase and having fun with roleplaying during the praparation can make the entire session the more enjoyable. Other people may prefer quick action and as little preparation time as possible, though - it's a matter of personal preference.

Preparation for a spanking can include one or more of the following:

This is typically the main part of preparation. In consensual spanking, the spankee is the center of attention before, during and after the "punishment." It can include, for example:

• An exchange that initiates spanking, a confession of breaking a rule, etc.
• taking the spankee to the place/room where the spanking will be given
• removing items of jewellery which could cause injury
• removing glasses, shoes, and/or socks
• undressing the spankee (fully or partially, as desired)
• wetting the buttocks and/or the panties (if desired)
• surveying the buttocks for marks from a prior spanking
• placing the spankee in a waiting position (e.g. kneeling or standing in the corner), or
• positioning the spankee in the desired spanking position

All of the above can be done by the spanker or by an assisting person. The spankee may be instructed to prepare himself/herself. This is reflected e.g. in the title of the spanking website Kara Prepare Yourself.

[edit] Preparation of the spanker

Typically little preparation is needed on the side of the spanker. Examples are:

• rolling up one's sleeves
• taking off one's jacket, sweater, etc.
• removing one's glasses (which could accidentally break)
• removing items of jewellery which could cause injury
• undressing, or putting on fetish clothing, in case of erotic spanking
• swinging the implement as a warm-up
• placing spankee in desired position (OTK, on or over a chair or bed, etc.).
• removal of any desired clothing depending upon the desired level of pain the spanker would like to inflict (over skirts, bloomers or on the bare). At times the spanker will have the spankee do this. It will be done by spankee in most cases so that bottom may be "preped" for receiving the intended punishment.

Making a birch.

For example:

• regular maintenance of leather implements with saddle soap or cleaners
• fetching the spanking implement from the place where it is stored
• cutting a switch from a tree
• cutting and binding a birch rod
• soaking a switch, birch or cane in water or brine for some hours
• displaying the implement for all parties
• examining the implement for length, weight and feel, e.g. canes, whips

Again, the preparation of the implement can be done by the spanker, by an assisting person, or by the spankee.

For example:

• placing a chair or stool in the center of the room
• moving other items of furniture out of the way so they will not be obstructing the spanking
• making a bed ready for the spankee to lie on
• setting the lighting to a desired level
• placing a blanket or big towel (spread out or rolled up), or a heap of cushions or pillows, on a bed, table or floor
• in BDSM: getting the item of spanking furniture (e.g. St. Andrews Cross or spanking bench) ready for use; fetching and preparing items of restraint
• locking the door

For example:

• making arrangements that the spanking will not be interrupted or disturbed
• giving the spankee a bath, shower, washing, lathering, scrubbing etc. before the spanking
• drying off the spankee, or making his/her bottom wet
• applying oil (baby oil, massage oil) or lotion
• massaging the spankee, making sure he/she is comfortable and relaxed
• stimulating the spankee erotically (for an erotic spanking)
• putting the spankee in spanking clothing or fetish clothing (e.g. ageplay clothing, drop-seat pajamas), items of the opposite gender (petticoating), etc.)
• changing the spankee's hairstyle, e.g. making plaits or opening her hair
• restraining the spankee (see bondage)
• other sadomasochistic stimulation (e.g. with spiked gloves, nipple clamps, clothespins, wax, nettles, ...)
