Protest (noun) is a declaration of objection, usually against something that is going on or that is planned. To protest means to voice one's protest.

Protest often occurs when a person is found guilty of some offense and is declared to be punished. Such protest against punishment is a form of verbal resistance. It is usually unwelcome to the authority person and may be called backtalk. Backtalk, especially if continued after a warning to be quiet and submit humbly and cooperatively to the punishment, can be a reason to give an extra punishment for resistance.
