Rib cage

The rib cage is the structure formed by the ribs in an animal's or human's chest. The rib cage is attached to the spine. It encases and protects inner organs such as the lungs and the heart.
In figure drawing, the rib cage is important because it defines the size, shape and position of the upper part of the torso. A typical way of sketching the rib cage is by drawing it as a kind of egg shape that has a flat cutaway at the bottom front, where the ribs end and the belly/abdomen begins. It is usually unneccessary to draw the individual ribs - it's enough to think of the rib cage as a single solid mass.
