The term rod is used for implements made from different species of plants that are not made from massive wood (such as paddles), typically more lightweight than sticks, and sometimes flexible. "Rod" can refer to, for example, a hollow cane, a switch, or a birch (i.e. a bundle of birch twigs), to be used as a spanking implement.

The Latin word for rod, Ferula, gave its name to a genus of plants from which hollow light rods were made, to be used for corporal punishment and other purposes. The Romans distinguished between single, cane-like rods (ferula) and bundles of thin (e.g. birch) twigs (virga).
