Sestina

From Spanking Art

Jump to: navigation, search

A sestina is an old verse form consisting of 6 sestets – six line stanzas – followed by one triplet. The words that end the lines of the first sestet are reused in each subsequent sestet, in a fixed pattern.

If the six line endiing words are "Alpha", "Beta", "Gamma", "Delta", "Epsilon", and "Phi" in the first sestet, the lines of the second sestet end in "Phi", "Alpha", "Epsilon", "Beta", "Delta", and "Gamma", in that order. Then the same reordering is done in each succcesive sestet. All six words are used in the final triplet, usually two in each line. No specific meter (rhythm) is required, but usually all the lines have the same meter.
