It is a satirical parody of the "Middle American" lifestyle epitomized by its title family, which consists of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie. "The Simpsons" is currently the longest-running American sitcom, and the longest-running American animated program.

The Simpson family first appeared as shorts in The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19 1987. The series premièred as an it's own show on December 17, 1989 and completed its 18th season in May 2007. It has also been renewed for a 19th season and further seasons are possible.
