Work in progress
From Spanking Art
A work in progress (abbreviated WIP) is a project or piece of work that is not yet finished and currently worked on.
In art, it is rare but the more interesting to see phases of a work in progress, such as a drawing or illustration. The first phase(s) will traditionally be sketches, medium phases may show more and more refined lineart, and the final phases may show the progress of colorization.
Nowadays, with scanners available, and in digital image editing, it is very easy to create 'snapshots' of a work in progress to share with other people. The assets of such WIP publication are:
- use for teaching, e.g. as a tutorial
- demonstating one's artistic approach and techniques
- getting feedback from others in early phases
The disadvantages are:
- it takes courage to publish an unfinished work with all its obvious faults
- reveals the secrets of one's techniques
- no surprise effect when the work is finished
